Center for Crafts

Type: Competition entry | Year: 2020 | Location: Follo, Norway | Size: 750 m2 | Program: Workshops, education facilities and exhibition

The project Værk/Sted (eng. workshop or direct translation crafts/place) explores the notion of place and tradition in a contemporary context. By a thorough analysis of the existing buildings – or characters – of the open-air museum, the proposal translates and reinterprets the local historical settlements into new architectural characters in their own rights.

Traditional nature-culture based values and understanding of local materials are reintroduced within the new buildings, and ‘the activity of the hand’ stands central in the distribution of programs. The buildings – through materiality, structure and use – seeks to explore the symbiosis between hand-material-tool, and functions such as workshop, education- and exhibition facilities highlights traditional crafts and its values of presence, shared knowledge and creation.
